Google “how to crack WEP” and you will understand why it’s so vital to setup up your wifi with WPA encryption. So here is my story with wpa_supplicant.
I have a HP nc6000 laptop with an Atheros AR5212. So I use http://www.madwifi.org witch work very well for WEP encryption. Moreover there is now a Debian package (since 2005-11-21): http://packages.qa.debian.org/m/madwifi.html.
But to support WPA I need wpa_supplicant. There is also a debian package so the main think was to write the wpa_supplicant.conf file. I started with a simple configuration taken from the documentation. But it did not work. After 2 days of tries and error I found the solution. I needed to specify nearly all paramters and not to use the default ones:
psk=”I won’t tell you ;-)”
I still have a problem. I cannot restart a connection without rebooting my laptop. Killing wpa_supplicant process and removing madwifi modules from the module do not fix the problem. Now I wait for madwifi-ng to be in Debian.
